Do’s and don’ts of autumn cuttings
Do
✓ Use a clean knife or secateurs to avoid spreading any fungal diseases.
✓ Mix seed and cutting compost with horticultural sand or grit to improve drainage and stimulate root growth.
✓ Ventilate cuttings in propagators once growth starts, by opening vents or removing the cover occasionally.
Don’t
✗ Cover pelargonium cuttings with a plastic bag as they are prone to rotting. In a propagator keep the cover vents open and water sparingly.
✗ Let the temperature fall below 10ºC otherwise the cuttings will stop growing strongly.
✗ Rush cuttings and try to pot them up before clear signs of growth appear.
