It’s a spider, man

Q I was hoping someone may be able to identify the spider in this picture. We were not sure whether it was a harmless garden spider or whether it was a false widow spider. Trevor Bayes, via email A The spider in question could be the noble false widow (Steatoda nobilis). Regrettabl­y, the image was slightly blurred so it was difficult to see its markings very clearly.

Though it can bite, and mild pain may be experience­d in some cases, it is a relatively innocuous creature and not to be feared.
