A yen for zen!

-

PEACE, of course, is when two countries are not warring with each other, or it can be when someone is having a quiet and/or tranquil time. In Japan, this latter meaning is reflected in the zen garden or ‘Japanese rock garden’.

Unlike a British rockery, this takes the form of a miniature stylised ‘dry’ landscape with careful arrangements of rocks, water features, moss, pruned trees and bushes, and gravel or sand raked to represent ripples in water. Generally, a zen garden is quite small, surrounded by a wall, and should be seen while seated from a single viewpoint outside the garden.
