Brazier
Metal bin or basket with steep sides, perforated to let in air.
Fire bowl
Pressed steel or cast-iron bowl without perforations in the burning area. Firelighter
Small block or pellet made from slow-burning, flammable material. Windward
The side the breeze is coming from (leeward is the side the breeze is going to).
Kindling
Short lengths of dry wood or dead tree branches about 1∕2in (1cm) thick. Seasoned logs
Thick, short lengths of wood that have been kept in an airy, preferably dry spot for six months to dry out thoroughly.
Kiln-dried logs
Logs that have been dried artificially in a heated kiln to speed up the process. They are often drier than seasoned logs.
