Wrap a banana
Warm layers will protect in winter
Raise the pot on feet and top it with a fresh layer of compost or straw to insulate the roots.
Using sharp, clean secateurs or shears, cut back all the foliage, leaving around 3ft (1m) of trunk still standing.
Wrap the whole pot in two-three layers of horticultural fleece, tying it securely with garden twine.
Finish with bubblewrap for extra insulation and waterproofing. Place the pot somewhere sheltered outdoors or move it to a frost-free greenhouse.
