Raise the pot on feet and top it with a fresh layer of com­post or straw to in­su­late the roots.


Us­ing sharp, clean se­ca­teurs or shears, cut back all the fo­liage, leav­ing around 3ft (1m) of trunk still stand­ing.


Wrap the whole pot in two-three lay­ers of hor­ti­cul­tural fleece, ty­ing it se­curely with gar­den twine.


Fin­ish with bub­blewrap for ex­tra in­su­la­tion and wa­ter­proof­ing. Place the pot some­where shel­tered out­doors or move it to a frost-free green­house.
