Overwintering chilli plants

-

Provided they’re healthy, these plants can overwinter, giving a headstart on spring-sown crops. You just need a well-lit, frost-free spot: 1

Choose wisely. Some varieties are more suited to overwintering than others. Very hot varieties derived from true perennial species (Solanum pubescens, S. chinense, S. frutescens and so on) are frequently most successful. 2

Only overwinter potted fruits, not those in beds. Prune them back slightly to fit your greenhouse (don’t over-prune). Reduce watering to keep the compost barely moist and stop feeding plants during the winter period. 3

Leaf fall is normal so don’t worry. In early spring, dislodge from the pot, gently remove some of the old compost and repot into new. Gradually increase watering and feeding. Prune back dead stems to where new growth is seen.
