Raisins are simply sweet grapes that are dried (naturally, in sunlight).

One cup of grapes provides about 100 calories, and more than a quarter of the daily recommende­d doses of vitamins K and C. Grape seeds, which are edible but bitter, are full of antioxidan­ts.

‘Merlot’ comes from merle or merlau (local dialectica­l words for ‘blackbirds’), due either to the dark skin of the grape, or because blackbirds readily eat the grapes off the vine.
