Peter’s top tips
1
Sow sweet peas in the soil, where they will grow and flower, to get long stems and plenty of quality fragrant blooms. Protect sowings from attack by mice and slugs. 2
Summer bedding, bought when garden centres reopened in mid-June and planted later, will keep on flowering if regularly fed and watered in dry weather. 3
Chrysanthemum blooms will increase in size when well fed. If flowering late, lift carefully with a large ball of soil around the roots, and either pot up or transplant into greenhouse border soil to flower until Christmas. 4
Continue cutting dahlias to bring in to the house and give away. The more you cut, the more blooms will come from side shoots.
