Julia Grier, West Lothian

AThe flower in question is Hesperantha coccinea ÔMajor’, previously called schizostylis. It also has the politically incorrect common name of Kaffir lily or river lily.

A member of the iris family and a native of South Africa, it’s happiest in full sun in sheltered, damp soil that does not dry out in summer.

Other equally appealing varieties are white ‘Alba’, pink ‘Sunrise’ and very pale pink ‘Viscountess Byng’.

Provided you feed it with a slowrelease fertiliser, such as Osmocote, in spring, which will sustain it throughout summer, and water it in dry spells, it will delight you with its starry blooms in early
