Planting guide

-

■ Make sure soil is not compacted. If making a planting hole is difficult, fork the whole area over first.

■ Should the planting hole be dry, soak the base thoroughly and allow it to drain.

■ Check plants have moist roots and, if overdry, plunge pot and all in a bucket of water for 15-20 minutes, then drain.

■ Tease out circling roots, position carefully at the correct depth in the hole, fill in and firm moderately.

■ Water in well and spread a 2in

(5cm)-deep mulch of soil conditioner around the plant, keeping its stem clear.

■ Sow seeds of biennial sweet rocket (Hesperis matronalis) and pale foxgloves in May or June for next year.
