A deciduous woody twiner whose white flowers ageing to yellow open over a long summer period, showing up well by night as well as wafting their sweet fragrance across the garden. H and S: 20ft (6m).

Trachelosp­ermum jasminoide­s AGM

Star jasmine is an evergreen twiner thriving in all but the coldest gardens, given a sheltered spot and good soil. White, windmill-like flowers open in summer to emit a strong, sweet scent. HxS: 12x5ft (3.5x1.5m).

Phlox paniculata ‘Mount Fuji’

This perennial phlox thrives in full sun or, on drier soils, light shade. The pure-white blooms of early and midsummer carry a sweet, peppery scent. Divide regularly. HxS: 30x24in (75x60cm).

The lowly evergreen perennial nightscent­ed phlox curls its petals by day to show their crimson backs, but opens them wide at night releasing a sweet fragrance. Best grown as a slightly tender alpine. H and S: 6in (15cm).
