Nicotiana ‘Lime Green’ AGM

This unusual tobacco plant has starry lime flowers that combine well with burgundy and bright colours. Direct sow in May, in moist, well-drained soil in sun or semi-shade. H: 2ft (65cm).

This magentapin­k cornflower attracts bees and butterflie­s. It looks great in a vase on its own or as part of a bouquet. Sow direct in well-drained, sun-baked soil now.

With its primrose flowers above lacy foliage, this is wonderful in a vase on its own or with peach roses. Direct sow now in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil in full sun. H: 2ft (60cm).

A marigold with cheering bold-orange flowers. Sow direct now in well-drained soil or pots in sun or semi-shade. The edible petals can be scattered onto salads. H: 17in (45cm).

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Almost Black’

This dark-claret sweet pea can be direct sown now at the base of a column of chicken wire or hazel sticks in moist, rich, well-drained soil in sun, or in a large pot. H: 5ft (1.5m).
