Spotlight on readers’ excellent images and how they captured them

Steve Palmer, Cheshire

As a child, Steve found himself fascinated by the quality of images his uncle was able to obtain from his Olympus OM1, compared to those from his mother’s 110 Instamatic. He saved up for his own 35mm camera, and hasn’t looked back. Steve has a love of nature – inspired, as so many of us are, by David Attenborough’s love of the natural world. The images shown here were all shot at the Waterlily House at London’s Kew Gardens. See more of his work at www.stevepalmer.photography.

?? ?? 3 Again, Steve wanted to show the abstract nature of the plants, which are partially obscured and blurred. It was 29°C that day, so keeping hydrated for the few hours he was there was very important. Pentax K-1, Tamron 70-200mm macro, 1/500sec at f/5.6, ISO 400 3

?? ?? 1 Steve wanted to show the contrast between the upright, man-made frames and the organic plants behind them. Editing was primarily in Camera Raw with Define used for noise reduction, and adjustments to structure and shadow in Viveza. Pentax K-1, Tamron 70-200mm macro, 1/800sec at f/5.6, ISO 400 1

?? ?? 2 The lush green of the plants, combined with the condensation and patterns on the glass, caught Steve’s eye. ‘I wanted to show an almost abstract side to the colourful complexity of the plants, which were partially obscured by the condensation.’ Pentax K-1, Tamron 70-200mm macro, 1/320sec at f/5.6, ISO 400 2
