Where are we going?

-

The bumper Christmas edition (AP 22-29 December) is a gem and real eye- opener. Congratulations to everyone who worked to produce such an informative and thoughtprovoking issue.

One thing that struck me in Dear Santa, covering the wishlist for new cameras in 2019, was the likely path to higher excellence. Few can deny the immense progress on image quality in the digital era, but there’s one question that is puzzling. If you accept that excellence is not a finite destination, how far beyond the current performance levels will makers go, bearing in mind that many photographers are content with current standards? And in practical terms, is higher image quality excellence needed or just desirable? When you take into account that very few photographers seem to print regularly beyond about A3 size, according to survey results, you have to question where camera makers are trying to take us, and all at a higher price for sure.
