Lowepro GearUp Memory Wallet 20
Michael Topham samples a new memory case
Here at AP we like to review a broad range of accessories from those costing just a few pounds to more extravagant ones that blow the budget. Lowepro’s GearUp Memory Wallet 20 falls into the former of these two categories, but if there’s something that should never be overlooked, it’s making sure your memory cards are well looked after and that they’re always kept in mint condition. There’s no excuse for stuffing memory cards into dirty pockets that don’t offer protection from dirt, moisture and other factors that could potentially damage them, especially when purpose-made wallets can be picked up so cheaply. Lowepro’s GearUp Memory Wallet 20 is part of the company’s accessories and inserts range and is a larger alternative to the S&F Memory Wallet 20. With a book-style opening and page-style storage, it provides a safe haven for CF, SD and XQD cards. The clear organiser pockets allow you to easily identify which card is which – good news when you’re trying to find one in a hurry. The wallet also comes with what’s best described as a swivel snap- on leash. This can be used to secure the pouch when you want to prevent it getting lost, and with practical dimensions (16x5.5x7cm) you’re unlikely to have any difficulty finding an appropriate space for the wallet in your kit bag. The soft-padded exterior provides adequate cushioning should the wallet fall from your hands to the floor, and the way the cards fit tightly into their appropriate slots means they won’t rattle around or work loose. Though other memory card cases with a hard plastic protective shell, many of which claim to be waterproof, can offer more robust protection, this memory card wallet provides excellent reassurance that your media is safe and secure when swapping cards over and you’re on the move.
Verdict
If you use CF, SD or XQD memory cards, or maybe a combination of all three, this compact memory organiser is a must-have if you don’t already own one. We can pretty much guarantee it won’t be the most exciting photorelated accessory you’ll ever buy, but from a practicality and protection point of view it does a great job of keeping your precious images safe, which is something you can’t really put a price on. All in all, it’s a fairly cheap but essential accessory for all photographers.
