Train of thought

Congratulations to Richard McVeigh on his winning entry on the front cover of the Christmas issue (AP 22-29 December 2018). There are hordes of amateur snappers out there taking superb pictures of our heritage railways. One only has to leaf through the pages of Heritage Railway or Steam Railway. When I am out and about taking pictures I never seem to be alone – there is always someone else about.

Photography isn’t a primary hobby of mine – heritage, particularly heritage railways, definitely is and photography enriches the pursuit hugely. It never occurred to me that AP might one day have a heritage railway scene on its front cover, or else I might have sent one in. Sadly, I have nothing in the context of this competition to compete with Richard’s beautifully atmospheric shot. I wish him success in his venture selling mounted prints. Mike Gosling
