Wex Photographer of the Year 2019 announced
WEX PHOTO Video has named Dan Portch from Sevenoaks in Kent as Wex Photographer of the Year 2019. He wins the overall title and a prize of £1,500 for his image (shown here), originally submitted as part of the retailer’s weekly #WexMondays contest on Twitter. His image beat 15,000 others submitted to the hashtag #WexMondays.
Dan, who still considers himself a beginner, became interested in photography after purchasing a DSLR to take pictures of his first child. In addition to photographing his children, he enjoys shooting on location in Devon, where he grew up, which led him to start seascape photography as a hobby. Dan’s interest in fine-art photography recently inspired him to focus more on mono and muted- colour work featuring architecture and seascapes. A Canon photographer, his gear comprises a Canon EOS 5D Mark III; 16-35mm f/4, 24-105mm f/4, 200mm f/2.8 lenses; and ND filters.
Second and third prizes went to David Hixon from Brixham, Devon, and Verity Milligan from Birmingham, respectively. David, who wins £500 in vouchers, is a long- exposure fan who considers himself an enthusiastic amateur. His kit consists of a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, a range of Canon and Tamron lenses, Slik tripod, and Nisi and Lee filters.
Verity, a professional photographer, wins £250 in vouchers. She’s been commissioned by organisations such as Visit Britain, American Express and Yorkshire Tea. She also teaches filmmaking and photography. She uses the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with Zeiss and Canon lenses, the Fujifilm X-T2 with 50-140mm and 56mm f/1.2 lenses, plus Gitzo Mountaineer Series 2 tripod and Lee and Benro filters.
A collection of 49 winning images from the #WexMondays contest will be exhibited at the Wex Photo Video Gallery (37-39 Commercial Road, London E1 1LF) until 31 January.
