Faced with high re­dun­dan­cies and

nan­cial strug­gles na­tion­wide, why does it seem that cam­era mak­ers are still pro­duc­ing ex­pen­sive mod­els?

There are plenty of other pres­sures fac­ing house­holds to make the buy­ing of a new cam­era a low pri­or­ity. A quick look through AP ads shows most cam­eras in four

gures, for the body only. Does aim­ing high when mar­kets are down make com­mer­cial sense?

As you can see in our From the Archives fea­ture (page 12), many cur­rent cam­era prices com­pare fairly well with those of the past. But even if a brand de­cided to­day to build a ba­sic low-cost cam­era to re ect the cur­rent eco­nomic cir­cum­stances (as­sum­ing it was nan­cially vi­able to do so, which is doubt­ful) it takes a cou­ple of years to bring a cam­era to mar­ket from con­cep­tion to sale so it would prob­a­bly be 2022 be­fore we saw it.
