Pheasant in Bluebells by Michael White

Nikon D500, 80-400mm lens at 400mm, 1/500 sec at f/5.6, ISO 3600

‘I’d had this idea for a while to shoot some wildlife in the local woods when the bluebells were in bloom,’ says Michael, who is based in Leeds. ‘I’d had some eeting encounters with deer before, but I wasn’t really happy with them. Then on Sunday evening my wife and I went for a walk in another wood where she said there were some good spreads of bluebells. What I hadn’t expected was just how many pheasants were in the area too. So when we got home I grabbed my camera and headed straight back out, hoping to get a clean shot of a pheasant surrounded by bluebells. In the space of half an hour I got some great shots. What really made this one stand out was that the path I was on was below the height of the bluebells and pheasant so it appears I’m at eye level, which is where you really want to be, rather than shooting up or down.’

London Tower Bridge by Yhun Suarez

Nikon D7200, Tamron 10-24mm, f/18, ISO 500, 3 bracketed exposures

‘I work for the NHS at the Royal Derby Hospital but have a passion for landscapes, portraits and architectural photography,’ says Yhun, from Derby. ‘I set out at 4am to capture the sunrise and hopefully some colourful sky, but had to wait until the sun was able to pierce through the clouds. At the same time the fog was also creeping over the cityscape. I walked around the bridge at many angles and was able to capture a few compositions I had in mind but this one stood out for me. It’s a blend of three handheld exposures, (1/400, 1/100, 1/25) which were merged in Photomatix, and ne-tuned in Photoshop and Color Efex.’ This is a nice composition

– the patch of orange sunlight draws the eye from the foreground fountains to Tower Bridge in the distance, with the clouds and mist adding a sense of drama. Yhun is on Facebook and Instagram: @yhun.suarez.photography.
