The Dynamic by Sebastian Bruno
Until 2 July, Martin Parr Foundation, Bristol See martinparrfoundation.org for opening times
This exhibition presents the story of The Abertillery and Ebbw Valleys Dynamic, a local newspaper from Wales with a difference. The show revolves around the paper’s editors – Tony Flatman and Julian Meek – as well as the community they represent, told by the paper’s former staff photographer, Sebastian Bruno.
The paper was published from 2015 to 2017. It became a cultural success, but a financial disaster. It campaigned to Remain in the EU referendum, in an area (Blaenau Gwent) which had the highest Leave vote in Wales, so its publishing period coincided with one of the most tumultuous and controversial periods in recent British history. The show includes photos, archive materials, and a mock-up newspaper office. It’s well worth a visit. See page 66 for Tracy MarshallGrant’s Final Analysis on another of Bruno’s pictures.
You Will Be Able To Take Great Photos by the End of This Book By Benedict Brain
£18.99, Ilex Press, hardback, 192 pages, ISBN: 9781781578681
Obviously, we expect most readers of our humble magazine to already be pretty good at taking great photos, but it never hurts to have a refresher.
Written by a former AP staffer, this book introduces the key skills you need as a photographer, and explores the approaches of different photographers. It would also work well as a gift for a budding photographer who isn’t sure where to start. It’s jargon-free and easy to follow, while including great technique and inspiration. Turn to page 38 for the first in a series of exclusive extracts from the book.
