STOPPO’S FISH­ERY is a 2.5-acre, 32-peg lake in pic­turesque coun­try­side on the South Der­byshire bor­der with Stafford­shire.

It is full of fish, and as the wa­ter warms, ex­pect to catch carp from 6 lb to the mid-20s, tench to 6 lb, spec­i­men bream to 10 lb, lots of skim­mers, perch to over 3 lb and an un­tapped head of qual­ity roach from 8 oz to 1 lb 8 oz.

There’s some­thing to suit ev­ery an­gler at this wa­ter, at Co­ton in the Elms, near Bur­ton upon Trent (DE12 8EE), whether you’re a spec­i­men hunter or fancy catch­ing top-notch sil­ver fish.

Es­tab­lished by John Stevens in 2000, the pool is 30 ft deep in the mid­dle, slop­ing up grad­u­ally to 4 ft around the mar­gins.

Pole, Method feeder or wag­gler all work well. Mag­gots, pel­lets (fish­ery feed pel­lets only, avail­able in 2 mm, 4 mm and 8 mm), corn, cast­ers, lun­cheon meat and worms all pro­duce bites, and bread punch over liq­uidised bread or bread flake on the bot­tom have been do­ing the job for the roach, bream and tench re­cently.

Pre­vi­ously a mem­bers-only venue, day ticket an­glers are now wel­come, and 27-year-old Polesworth rod Andy Ful­leylove is now a part­ner in the fish­ery.
