What’s be­ing caught? Mainly bream to 6 lb. Ex­pect big bags when lo­cated, with roach, dace and oc­ca­sional carp.

Tac­tics? Pole and stick float with mag­gots will pro­duce roach. If the bream show, swap to a feeder or hold back on a pole with corn and worms over ground­bait. Lure fish­ing pro­duces perch and pike. No night fish­ing, but the bream show in the evenings, so don’t leave early.

River Roach

Where? Bradley Way, Rochford, Es­sex, SS4 1BU. Free fish­ing. Tel: Eclipse Baits on 07872 449023. What’s be­ing caught? This tiny tidal river has some sur­prises, hav­ing be­ing stocked from floods on neigh­bour­ing lakes. Ex­pect carp well into dou­bles, chub to over 4 lb and plenty of roach and a few big perch. Tac­tics? Travel light and check out all the deeper parts at low tide with a sim­ple light leger and bread, mag­gots or worms, or trot at high tide.

River Rother

Where? Wit­ter­sham, East Sus­sex. Ac­cess to River Rother As­so­ci­a­tion wa­ters through a num­ber of clubs, in­clud­ing Rye DAS, or Clive Vale AC with mem­ber­ship at £50.

What’s be­ing caught? Good nets to over 20 lb of roach and skim­mers.

Tac­tics? Pole is best, with worm and cast­ers over fine ground­bait.

River Thames

Where? Thames Street, Wey­bridge, Sur­rey, KT13 8NG. Free fish­ing. Tel: Wal­ton Tackle Ex­change on 01932 242377. What’s be­ing caught? Good bags of bream to over 7 lb and a few roach to over 1 lb, with de­cent perch, pike to over 20 lb and a few carp and barbel. Tac­tics? Big­ger pike mostly to boat an­glers fish­ing dead­baits, but lures cer­tainly worth cast­ing around from the bank. Bream and roach on ground­bait feeder, af­ter dark is best.
