The river has ben­e­fited from fresh flushes, though it has be­come low again of late. Nev­er­the­less, good numbers of size­able roach are be­ing caught on this tidal-af­fected length, with some spec­i­mens to 2 lb present, amongst lots of 3 oz to 1 lb-plus fish. Pro­duc­tive spots in­clude the sand­bank pegs by the tree stump, op­po­site the church. Tac­tics? Stick float or pole with cast­ers over hemp will en­tice bet­ter spec­i­mens, catches to 15 lb pos­si­ble. Red mag­gots also score well, as do tares.

Where? Padding­ton Bank, War­ring­ton, Cheshire, WA1 3PB. Mem­bers only. War­ring­ton AA mem­ber­ship £50 plus a £40 join­ing fee. Tel: 01928 716238. What’s be­ing caught? Roach, hy­brids and perch are very wide­spread on th­ese lower reaches. Catches to over 15 lb are pos­si­ble at this time of year. Tac­tics? Pole, whip or stick float. Shuf­fle the rig to es­tab­lish the right catch­ing depth, which can be around 3 ft. Use red mag­gots to at­tract and catch fish to 8 oz. Bet­ter sam­ples on tares, hemp and cast­ers.
