IHAD a good draw in the Wolver­hamp­ton AA Three­day Fes­ti­val, win­ning the match on Day One on the Stoke City DAA’s Shroppy at Nor­bury Junc­tion, per­ma­nent peg 59, with 10 lb 2 oz of all perch to

1 lb 8 oz, down the track on pole with worm and cast­ers.

Sun­day’s match was on Izaak Wal­ton (Stafford) AA’s Shroppy at Lit­tle Onn, and I won my five-peg sec­tion with 5 lb 11 oz of roach on pole with pinkies and squatts over ground­bait. Paul Turner won with 13 lb 11 oz 12 dr – a 4 lb 8 oz chub, a 2 lb bream and hy­brids on pole with cast­ers and mag­gots at peg 12.

I needed a good draw for the Staffs-Worces­ter Canal in Wom­bourne, but I got peg 5, with no cover or fea­tures, and had small roach, gud­geon and chublets for 3 lb 8 oz and nowhere.

Chris Mor­ris won with 29 lb 7 oz, in­clud­ing a brace of 2 lb cru­cians, chub, skim­mers and perch on pole with worm and cast­ers at peg 8.

Well done to Pre­ston­based Chris Gor­rell (Wayne’s Tackle Ma­trix) who won with 12 points, and many thanks to Paul and Neil Turner for or­gan­is­ing such a great event, which at­tracts an­glers from all over the coun­try.

Wayne Gray won a match at Don­ning­ton with 23 lb of roach to 10 oz, while top weight on the Sand­ford stretch was 19 lb. Tac­tics? Pole with cast­ers over ground­bait for the roach at Don­ning­ton. What’s be­ing caught? Hy­brids to 2 lb 8 oz, perch to 3 lb, bream to 4 lb, chub to 4 lb 8 oz, but they do go to 6 lb, with roach to 6 oz. Wed­nes­field rod Mel Wood topped a re­cent Wolver­hamp­ton Over-60s Club Open here with five perch to 2 lb 8 oz and roach, skim­mers and hy­brids, on pole with red mag­gots at peg 2 on the ivy, in the wood.

Tac­tics? Pole with dead or live red mag­gots, worms and cast­ers for the perch. The bream and skim­mers are com­ing to worms. Pole and sin­gle caster for the roach and chub, us­ing a size 16 hook over a bed of cast­ers and hemp. Squatts and pinkies over ground­bait for a mixed net of sil­ver fish.
