Heavenly match day at Haven
IVISITED the fantastic Haven Fishery, in Stainforth, near Doncaster, for an Angling Star writers reunion match.
The paper no longer exists, but former editor Jim Baxter tries to keep everyone in touch by holding these matches once a year.
I made a few phone calls and discovered that it was full of big carp, but also had masses of silver fish.
Due to the cooler nights we have been having, I opted to play it safe, fishing for the silver fish with a worm-and-caster approach, before targeting the carp in the margins later on.
The plan half worked, as I managed to put 50 lb of silver fish onto the scales, along with five carp for 30 lb, to give me 80 lb-plus and second place.
The match was won with a
chopped worm for the bream and perch.

What’s being caught? Lots of small roach and perch feeding all along the canal, double-figure bags commonplace, with a few better skimmers. Good perch and pike snapping at hooked fish as anglers bring them in, so worth a go for predators. Tactics? Short pole, 5 or 6 sections, with maggots or pinkies over groundbait for plenty of bites from small fish. Long pole with hemp and tares or bread punch to try to pick out some better roach. Lures for the pike and perch.

John fished for carp all day with pellets and paste on a top kit and two sections, feeding plenty of 6 mm pellets – an outstanding performance.
There wasn’t the head of carp in the area where I drew, as the 30 lb bags either side proved, so I was never going to come close to John, whatever I’d done.
My plan to target the silver fish ensured that I enjoyed a fantastic day’s fishing and finished best of the rest.
The Haven Fishery is only available to season ticket holders, and is located by Stainforth Greyhound Track, DN7 5HT.
