PAUL POTTER hopes that other anglers will catch chub like this 7 lb 6 oz giant – or even bigger ones – from the Longham free stretch of the Dorset Stour.

Local Paul revealed: “I grew up with this famous stretch as a boy in Bournemouth.

“Some folk will say: ‘Why mention the water?’

“My thoughts are that I hope someone catches it at 8 lb on a free stretch, as it can be an expensive game. Some people can’t afford to fish, with the cost of some of the clubs down south.

“If we didn’t share our stories sometimes, it wouldn’t be as much fun, and it encourages more to fish. Good luck to all who try!

“I had this chub when it was foggy and cold – at 2.30am my rod took off like a rocket!”

Paul used a hook bait hand-rolled by his friend, Steve Downing from the Anglers Hook Bait Company, along with pellets and hemp. 66.1% of British record

ANGLER’S MAIL columnist Duncan Charman has caught bigger perch from stillwaters, but rates this 4 lb 2 oz River Thames beauty as his best stripy of all.

Aldershot, Hampshire-based Duncan explained: “It was a roach session on the Thames in Surrey, but it turned into a dream perch session when a ‘sleeper’ rod produced three big fish topped by this 4 lb 2 oz specimen.

“Although I knew that there was a possibility of a ‘three’, I never expected a fish of this size to turn up. I fished a small roach livebait on a paternoster rig, with 6 lb fluorocarbon.”

Turn to p.50/51 for Duncan’s super selection of South East predator venues.
