85.7% of British record

PERCH angler Andrew Shepherd had a surprise on the Shropshire Union Canal when he banked this 4 oz 8 dr British record-nudging ruffe.

Andrew, who is 26 and from Staffordshire, lured his first-ever ruffe on a 2 in. green Ecogear Creature Bait on a club water stretch.

The official ruffe record is still 5 oz 4 dr, caught by R. Jenkins from West View Farm, in Cumbria, in 1980.

But Andrew’s pal Ian Gregory, pictured in page 9 with an impressive perch brace, is still trying to sort out his application for a 5 oz 8 dr ruffe caught last winter.

Ian said: “There are a few 5 oz-plus ruffe in the canal, and I’m confident of getting another this winter.”

Clearly the top catch reported this week in ‘closest to record’ terms, Andrew’s ruffe nets him our main Fish

Of The Week prize.
