Rub­bish tucked un­der the bridge

IN THIS col­umn, I men­tion wrig­gling un­der a bridge to get to a dif­fi­cult swim (pic­tured be­low). What I didn’t write about, nor did I get a photo of, was the garbage I found un­der­neath that bridge.

I wasn’t the only an­gler to pass that way, but it seemed I was the only one not to dis­card my bait cans af­ter use there. I counted 11 corn cans and 14 meat cans, all thrown away, left to rot, a slur on the rep­u­ta­tion of our sport.

We’ve all been rabbiting on for decades about an­glers who leave lit­ter. I can re­mem­ber Tay­lor and Walker talk­ing about the prob­lem in the ’60s, but it’s still here to­day.

Like a lot of things in fish­ing, I some­times think we need more ac­tion and less yak!
