We head to the prolific Peatling Pools in Leicestershire
IF YOU’RE looking for a venue to help blow away the closed-season blues, pay Lutterworth’s Peatling Pools a visit soon.
Unlike most commercials, this fishery has been allowed to mature naturally over the past 30 years, so the flora and fauna is simply stunning – with 30ft tall trees, bankside bushes and reedbeds all creating enticing features for anglers to fish to.
The three coarse pools (Malcolm, Magna and Parva) all boast similar stockings of mixed silverfish, carp and F1s, and Angling Times senior reporter Mark Peck couldn’t wait to get his kit to the bank and sample what was on offer.
The central island on Malcolm looked irresistible to Mark and he quickly snapped up a peg around 15m from this feature. Using a waggler and maggot feeder attack, he created a bed of bait on the deck around 4ft from the island at a depth of 9ft. Starting on the waggler and catapulting maggots, a string of quality roach and ide to 1lb were soon in the net, but the next cast produced a savage take from a hard-fighting 1lb 8oz perch.
After several more roach and ide and a constant stream of maggots going in, a switch to the feeder was on the cards – and what a change it was, helping to produce a stunning 8lb-plus carp on the first cast.
Single and double maggot kept the roach coming but a switch to a segment of chopped worm made all the difference and another big carp, a couple of F1s, another big perch and a bonus 3lb chub made their way to the net. In four hours Mark had taken well over 40lb of mixed fish, including two proper lumps – but with barbel to 8lb, perch to 5lb and a big head of chub still hiding across all three coarse pools at Peatling, the river– species sport is sure to get better over the next couple of months.

RULES: Barbless only, groundbait in moderation, all anglers to have an unhooking mat, match anglers to have all nets laid out on bank before putting in water, no more than 60lb of fish in a net, minimum of three nets per angler
