Fishery of the Week Westwood

Catching is a virtual certainty here

-

THERE’S no better time to take a friend or family member fishing than the Easter holiday period.

With temperatures rising and fishing becoming easier by the day, novice anglers are far more likely to enjoy a memorable session than they would in the depths of winter.

As anyone who has previously taken a beginner fishing will tell you, there is little value in visiting a challenging venue where they will struggle for bites. In this instance you need a lake where they are virtually guaranteed to catch.

Often dubbed ‘dads and lads pools’, such relatively easy waters can be found on hundreds of commercial complexes all over the UK (many of which are listed in this week’s Where to Fish section for each region).

Although they are not labelled as such, two of the best pools of this type in the country have to be Osprey and Falcon Lakes on Lincolnshire’s Westwood Lakes complex.

These prolific canal-shaped lakes are a fantastic option if you want plenty of bites and love the feeling of not knowing what fish species is going to pull your float under next. Both pools are absolutely stuffed with small F1s, barbel, roach, bream and the odd carp.

Pleasure anglers find it easy to catch a 100lb net here in summer from every peg, so finding some fish to pull the elastic out of your friend’s pole shouldn’t be difficult.

Despite an 11m-13m width to play with on both lakes, most people target the fish close in using just the top-4 or even the top kit of their pole.

With a banded pellet or a maggot on the hook, feeding can be done by hand, making the fishing nice and simple. Bites should be instant and the fishing frenetic.

You can also park behind your peg at most swims on these two lakes so access is easy. With a café and tackle shop on site, comfort levels are stepped up even further. They are both great places for a half-time break!

If you fancy giving these two superb lakes a go this weekend and taking along a member of your family, a friend or a work

colleague you can even get a free one-day rod licence by taking part in the Take A Friend Fishing scheme, details of which can be seen on the right hand side of this page.
