Captor turns down Ibiza holiday

DAVE Magalhaes turned down a trip to Ibiza for his 36th birthday to go fishing under the flight path of Heathrow instead – but he couldn’t have been happier.

The Davies Angling manager bagged two 42-pounders and a 30 during a birthday weekend at Horton, after his girlfriend had suggested more exotic getaways.

“She’d tried getting me to Ibiza as I love it out there,” Dave told Carpfeed, “then she rattled off a load of weekend destinations and restaurants, but I told her that I just wanted to go fishing – man, I’m getting old!”

With girlfriend in tow, the Surrey angler headed to RK Leisure’s Horton for a birthday weekend and even made his other half move swims early on Sunday morning.

In a corner swim full of activity, Dave hooked his first fish before he’d even put his banksticks in.

“The fight was slow and determined, with the fish plodding from left to right, right to left, all the way in. Once it was close in, it woke up a little and started to charge about, taking line on a couple of occasions.

“I got the missus to stand at the front of the swim with the net and once the fish was ready, I guided it straight over the net cord and shouted at her to lift!

“I could see it was a big fish and on the scales I was pleasantly surprised when a weight of 42lb 12oz was read out.”

It wasn’t long before Dave’s second rod, still lying on the ground, was also away.

“Just like the first fish,” he said, “it charged around the front of the swim. Again, the missus netted it first time.

“It looked identical to the first fish and I wasn’t at all surprised when 42lb was read out.”

Dave’s memorable session was completed the following morning with a 30lb 10oz mirror.

He fished Nashbait Scopex Squid pop-ups on chod rigs and 15mm Scopex Squid boilies topped with fake corn on 20lb Nash Armourlink.
