QFor fishing to tight holes in the weed, what sort of rig is best? Should I drop the leadcore?
AHi Corey. I presume you mean spots surrounded by tall weed growth, and you’re concerned about line lay? If that’s the case then you should still use a leader to cope with the abrasion caused by the weed. Also, dropping the lead is vital to the safe landing of the fish and, as such, I always use a lead clip with the tail rubber wetted and only pushed on lightly. The lead clip must be the type that locks the swivel in place with a peg, to allow the safe function of the system.
To this I fit a short length (30cm or so) of anti-tangle tubing. The mainline must be strong and durable - I use nothing less than 0.40mm - and this is connected to a 6ft leader of heavy-duty fluorocarbon. I use Spectrum Z from ProLogic in 0.6mm (56lb), and can testify to its toughness. It’s not only hard for the fish to see, it also has a high density and will drape the wall of weed nicely as it runs up, off the spot.
I connect my mainline and leader with a double grinner knot (five turns on the mainline and four with the leader) and cover this with a piece of putty. I also dot the leader with more ‘mouse droppings’ of putty to ensure it stays low and unobtrusive.
As far as the actual rig is concerned, that’s largely down to personal preference. I favour a variation of the multi-rig for much of my fishing, either with a wafter or a low pop-up. Adam Penning, ProLogic
