Focus on the Old Nene at March plus great swims to head for now
THE recent cold snap might have been the kiss of death on some commercial fisheries, but for anglers fishing the Old River Nene in the Cambridgeshire town of March it has signalled the start of bumper catches.
This urbanised stretch always produces the goods in the winter, when large shoals of quality roach and rudd pack into it. Nets to 30lb have already
featured in open matches held on the day-ticket March DAA water on the edge of town, and good catches have also been made on the free-to-fish section in town.
Many visitors prefer to fish just a whip or long pole with breadpunch, loosefeeding small balls of punch crumb into their swim every so often to keep the bites coming.
Some of the fish top 1lb, so don’t fish too light. There’s also the chance of a bonus tench from some swims.
