Q I want to give fluorocarbon mainline a go but have read about how you need to pre-stretch it first. Is that right? A There are a few things I do to get the best out of fluorocarbon mainline.

Once I’ve spooled up, I tie a loop knot in the end and place it over a bankstick. Then I pace it out, just for 10 yards to start with, flick over the bail-arm and pull out any stretch in that section. You’ll find there is more stretch on the first pull – after that it retains a ‘steely’ pre-stretched feel. Then I wind in and repeat the process at 20 yards, 30 yards and so on. All this prep makes the line lie nice and limp. At the end of each session I apply a few drops of Fluoro Plus to a sponge and wind the line through this to keep it clean and in top condition.
