Two twenties from a boat on the Shropshire Union Canal.

-

MICKEY Broome waited seven years to catch his second canal twenty – and then caught two in four days.

Fishing from his boat, Arkwright, on the Shropshire Union Canal, Mickey bagged mirrors of 21lb and 28lb. He said: “I have been canal carping for years and the one and only 20lb-plus fish I had was way back in 2011, so to get two in four days has made my year.”

The first fish came on Saturday from a spot Mickey had caught a single carp from last year. The 34-year-old said: “I got there at tea time and put a Manilla wafter on a Ronnie rig down the side of my boat with a few handfuls of hemp, a few bits of corn and a couple of Manilla 12ml boilies. The alarm went at dead on 12.30am as I was watching the DVD of An Idiot Abroad!

“The fish came in pretty easily considering it was 28lb bang on!” said the Wolverhampton angler, who added: “I worked away Monday and Tuesday in Wales. I got back late on the Tuesday and me and my girlfriend found ourselves driving in the dark up the canal to the spot again. We arrived at 11pm and got the rods out.

“Nothing happened in the night until the next morning at 8.30am, when I had started the engine on the boat to go back home.

“My girlfriend, Kate Freeman was at the front screaming, ‘your rod’s going!’

“I ran down and after a dogged fight I slipped the net under my second twenty in four days and only my third twenty ever. The first fish was a personal best too, so I’m on cloud nine at the moment.”
