BE A LORD OF THE MANOR AT HORAM

-

FOR great fishing in a wild environment, these nine lakes at Horam Manor in East Sussex are hard to beat.

Spread across two valleys, this family-run fishery is stocked with a mixture of coarse species, and each lake offers a different challenge.

Angling Times spoke to venue owner Graham to get a feel for what anglers can expect when visiting the venue. He said: “All the lakes are fishing very well at the moment and we offer a something for anglers of all abilities. We love teaching people how to start fishing, and we estimate around 200 youngsters learn to fish on the Great Pond every year.

“We try to keep the lakes as natural and wild as possible.

This has benefited the fish and surrounding wildlife. Across the pools we have carp to 20lb, tench to 5lb and some massive perch to 3lb-plus.

“While targeting these stunning fish you can enjoy watching kingfishers and the rare dragonflies that visit the site such as the Brilliant Emerald.

“A variety of tactics can be used to outwit the fish. Floatfishing against the reeds and lily pads with baits such as corn or meat will see you connect with carp, tench and bream. A change to maggots will make the float go under all day from roach and rudd.

“For bigger fish it’s best to use larger baits, and anglers legering

quality boilies will find the bigger carp. In the summer sun these fish can also be stalked off the surface on freelined crust. Anglers have even caught carp fly fishing on the quieter ponds.

“There is a small shop on site that sells end tackle and bait. Fishing is from dawn till dusk, but for those who wish to stay that bit longer, night fishing is available by prior arrangement.
