Bagging up on roach on the £5-a-day Coventry Canal
IT’S no secret that the nation’s canals are home to plenty of quality fish – but getting through to them can pose a few problems along the way.
With vast swathes of small roach and perch ready to attack a hookbait the second it breaks the surface, it’s often a case of wading through the tiddlers before you can bank something more memorable.
But there are a few hidden gems where almost every fish is more than up to scratch. The Coventry Canal in the city centre is one such place, and it doesn’t take many roach and bream to put together a 15lb bag.
The redfins range from a couple of ounces to over 1lb, with stacks of skimmers from 8oz to 3lb thrown into the mix.
Bait-Tech and Shakespeare’s Darren Massey has put in dozens of sessions this year on other waters where speed fishing for small roach is the name of the game, and reckons this is the perfect place to break the mould. “There aren’t many canals where double figures are pretty much guaranteed, but I’d say this is one of them,” explained Darren.
“The beauty of it is that the fish aren’t packed into just a few pegs, and you can catch big roach and skimmers throughout.”
Access to the towpath is good, with plenty of streets offering parking within a short walk of the canal. And if you’re low on bait, or need a top-up of terminal tackle, then one of the best tackle shops in the country is nearby – WHLane & Sons is less than two miles away.
Given the choice, Darren will always select a peg with a bit of width, as the fish tend to settle better in such areas.
Groundbait is fed on a line directly in front of the peg, around three-quarters of the way across, with maggots, casters and a pinch of chopped worm going in at the same distance but to the left of the float.
Single maggot or caster hookbaits are all that are needed because of the lack of small fish, and almost every time the float dips the landing net will be
called into play.
In just four hours Darren amassed over 15lb, with the fish averaging 4oz to 6oz.
