THIS superb 40lb 3oz common was the pick of six fish landed by 61-year-old David Gowing during a four-night session at the Carp Society’s Farriers Lake, in the Cotswold Water Park, Gloucestershire.
Targeting the edge of a weedbed at 40yds, David began by laying down around 3kg of 15mm and 18mm Mainline Cell and Hybrid boilies using a throwing stick and a Spomb. He then fished a mixture of washed-out pink Cell pop-ups or snowman Hybrid rigs over the top. As well as the common, he also banked a stunning 33lb 10oz linear (inset), along with a trio of mid-thirty-pound commons and a twenty.
David, who used a blowback rig, said: “When I arrived at the lake nobody was catching much, nor using much bait, so I decided to put a bit out and see what happened. I had nothing for the first 24 hours, but then at lunchtime on the second day I got the run that resulted in the biggest common. It was my first UK forty for three years, so I was well pleased with the result.”
David used size 6 Fox SSC barbless hooks tied to E-S-P Tungsten Loaded hooklinks. Because of the heavy weed growth at the venue, he fished his rigs on safety lead clip set-ups.
