CARP TEAM ENGLAND ‘HELD BACK’ BY LACK OF FUNDING

-

ENGLAND’S bronze medal at the recent Carp Fishing World Championships could easily have been gold if the team had received funding.

That’s the feeling of manager Rob Hughes, whose young charges returned from the event on Lake Sava, Serbia, proud of their achievements but with a nagging sense of ‘what might have been’.

The team failed by a whisker to lift the vaunted global title, having to settle for third place behind Ukraine and Croatia, both of whom had received sufficient financial backing to practise on the tricky venue beforehand.

Rob told Carpfeed: “We went over ‘blind’, with nobody having even seen the venue, never mind practise on it. It all comes down to funding, and the lack of it. It cost us around £8,000 to do the trip, and the limited coffers we have simply wouldn’t stretch to a recce trip beforehand, which is a shame. Without the funding shortfall, it might have been a different story.”
