QI’ve been having problems with line twist. I’ve followed all the advice I’ve read about respooling my reels, yet it still happens. What am I doing wrong?
AFirstly, I would strongly recommend that you follow the advice of the manufacturer of the line that you’re using, as they tend to know their products better than anyone. As far as we (Gardner Tackle) are concerned the correct way of loading mono is to compensate for any twist created by a rotating bail arm/roller right from the outset. The method I use is to weigh the bulk spool down in water, so that the line comes off the spool anticlockwise. This offers the least twist but is by no means perfect, due to difference in diameter of your reel spool and the bulk spool you’re loading from.
Carefully monitor the build-up of twist and alter the orientation of the bulk spool to nullify the twist, before reversing the spool back to its correct (original orientation) as soon as the twist has been removed by reeling a few yards on.
The main thing about loading line is to take your time and keep checking the twist by slackening off the line from the last ring down. Remember, line isn’t twisted when it is loaded on the bulk spool so any issues with twist are ‘created’.
