No better place for winter silvers

-

This free-to-fish stretch of river is alive with silver fish which have been caught in staggering numbers in recent matches. Winning weights from the length have pushed 30lb, with 60-peg matches producing back-up weights of around 10lb from virtually every peg.

These decent nets consist mainly of roach, rudd, perch and small bream. Although there are better fish present, it takes numbers of fish to push your net over 20lb – with some anglers catching in excess of 500 fish a match.

The pole, whip, or waggler are the best tactics to amass these bumper bags with maggots, casters, pinkies and hemp all good bets.

Angling Times news reporter Freddie sandford has fished matches here recently and says: “i’d start off by introducing some groundbait down the track. This gives the better fish something to settle over. Bites come thick and fast over the top, but often you have to play around with baits to catch the better fish.

“For the bigger roach i tend to target the far side with hemp. i’ve found the better fish tend to feed more confidently over there and the seed is a great way to pick them out. it helps if your swim has a boat or some far bank-vegetation for the fish to use as refuge.”

The stretch also holds perch, zander and pike which may be worth targeting on light lure tackle. There is always a chance of a surprise capture too – with reports of two small carp caught in a recent match.
