South Our guide to White Springs, the GUC, and hot fisheries to head for this week

Angling Times (UK) - - CONTENTS -

SPREAD across 37 acres of Welsh countryside and featuring five large lakes all offering top-class coarse fishing, White Springs really needs little introduction.

It’s known for its big carp sport, but in recent weeks big perch have featured too.

Stripeys are present in a lot of the waters at White Springs but the Big Pit has been in the best form of late.

Stephen Jones had a remarkable haul of perch from this water, with several fish over 2lb topped by a monster of 4lb 7oz. You don’t need complicated tactics to outwit these fish either, as pole or feeder-fished worms, maggots or prawns can always be relied on for a few bites.

You won’t be short of bites on the Pleasure Lake either, where 94lb bag weights have been caught in recent matches.

These nets consist mainly of carp, bream, roach, perch and the odd tench. Rob Evans had a day to remember targeting the roach on this lake and reported catching redfins steadily all day, including a specimen of 2lb.

For those looking to smash their carp pb, the 9.5-acre Specimen Lake holds fish to 45lb and a large head of 30lb-plus fish. Captures from the lake of late have been very good for the time of year. No particular peg appears to be dominating, with fish averaging over 20lb coming from all over.

Boilies are the number one bait for these big fish, and a small spread of whole and chopped baits is enough to get the fish grubbing around. Sweet pop-up hookbaits are working well at present, with a fish known as Double D falling to a white banoffee pop-up just last month.
