ELL that’s it, another fishing year over – and what a year it’s been! So much variety, so many surprises and so many specimen fish have kept the Angling Times team on their toes, with wall-to-wall whackers from start to finish!

Some of the roach catches of recent weeks have been phenomenal and experts are predicting that the Holy Grail of records could go before the end of the season. However, it’s likely to be from a stillwater rather than a river if cover star Ryan Hayden’s fish are anything to go by.

So has everything just got bigger, or are we just getting better at catching them? There have certainly been some stand-out fish in 2018, as our special Fish of the Year issue reveals this week.

We’ve picked out the cream of the crop and brought you the winning tactics behind them, plus asked our regular columnists to give us their reactions to the year gone by.

Dom Garnett, who loves taking a sideways look at fishing, has come up with his alternative awards that will certainly raise a smile.

But what stood out for you in 2018? Which catch of yours made you proud? Which tactics or fishery was your ‘go to’ for guaranteed action?

In the next edition of Angling Times – out on January 8 – you’ll be able to find loads of inspiring ideas for your fishing for the year ahead. Happy New Year to all our loyal readers, and a huge thank you for supporting us in the last 12 months.

I hope we’ve informed, entertained, directed you to better catches and helped you enjoy this wonderful sport we all love – see you in January!
