Modified feeder traps giant Dorset redfin

Angling Times (UK) - - FISH OF THE YEAR SPECIAL -

Dan Gale, 3lb 2oz roach, River Frome, Dorset

THE year 2018 has been a phenomenal one for big roach, and Dan Gale caught one of the most impressive specimens of the season during a trip to the River Frome in Dorset.

The immaculate 3lb 2oz redfin, which the Hants specimen ace rates as being ‘at the top of the list of all the catches that he’s ever made’, was banked using a modified inline swimfeeder which Dan made specifically for the task.

“After 30 minutes in one swim, I moved downstream and bait dropped a couple of pinches of hemp,” said the 35-year-old. “I then cast my adapted feeder with a short hooklink on to the spot.”

For a hookbait Dan threaded a fake maggot on to the shank of a size 14 barbed hook.

No live maggots were used on the hook to help him avoid smaller ‘nuisance’ roach.

The roach is ‘at the top of the list of all the catches’ that Dan has ever made.

Dan converted a Drennan feeder to make it inline . A short hooklink converts more pick-ups to fish on the bank.Dan used red maggots inside his feeder. A single fake maggot was used on the hook.
