James Champkin, nine big perch to 4lb 4oz, River Lea

QUIVERTIPPED lobworms helped James Champkin to compile a stunning catch of big perch from the River Lea.

The Leighton Buzzard, Beds, angler banked nine 3lb-plus perch to a best of 4lb 4oz over three short trips of no more than a couple of hours each.

James said: “I’ve found perch in a completely new area of the river this winter, and the results have been amazing. All have been caught on quivertipped lobworm while spraying maggots over the top. The fishing has been frantic at times, with bites coming as soon as the worm hits bottom.”

James’ tempted all his fish using light running rigs on 1lb Avon rods with fine 0.5oz quivertips.

His set-up was completed by a 6lb mainline and 4.4lb fluorocarbon hooklengths connected to size 8 hooks.
