Fake corn on heli rigs at range defeats the crayfish and leads to one of the top catches of all time

VINNIE Durn finished his angling year in breathtaking style by compiling one of the best roach hauls ever taken – three 3lb-plus fish to a best of 3lb 8oz!

The Bristol-based specimen angler targeted an undisclosed southern gravel pit, where he fished at 60 yards to the back of a gravel bar using fake sweetcorn hookbaits on helicopter setups to avoid the venue’s huge crayfish population.

“I fished the rigs over a big bed of groundbait, hemp and sweetcorn – and all were caught through the night and the following morning from the tightly fished area!” he said.

Vinnie backed up the big trio with a pair of 2lb 8oz fish in the memorable session.

Attaching the hooklink heli-style helps prevent tangles. A single grain of fake corn makes a fine big roach bait. A 1oz cage feeder is perfect for the job. Groundbait and corn make the ideal feeder mix.
