ROMAN Vann ended the 2017/18 river season in fine style by banking a 3lb 1oz roach from a southern chalk stream.

Rather than feed his swim little-and-often, the 26-year-old introduced a gallon of hemp with a bait dropper at the start of his session, before casting a maggot feeder rig over the top. Not long after he was celebrating the capture of his new personal best.

“I’m an animal when it comes to feeding… it’s all or nothing,” said Roman.

“Many anglers can’t get their head around this approach, but I don’t think the roach actually fill themselves up on the hemp.

“It’s just a great attractor and then the maggots are like the cherries on the top of a cake – they just pick them off!”

?? ?? A Black Cap feeder is a solid choice for roach. Two rubber float stops act as a buffer against the swivel. A short mono or fluoro hooklink of 4ins-6ins is ideal. Try switching between maggot colours on the hook.
