OUR TOP FIVE ALTERNATIVE BAITS TO TRY

Angling Times (UK) - - ULTIMATE GUIDE TO 2019 -

1 SLUGS Regarded by many as one of the finest of all chub baits, black slugs can be found in abundance on early mornings in areas of wet, dew-laden grass. They’re a hardy bait too, which will withstand many recasts.

2 ELDERBERRIES These plump seasonal berries are plentiful in autumn and make a supreme roach hookbait. Feeding hempseed and fishing an elderberry on the hook is a classic combo that catches quality redfins.

3 MACARONI CHEESE Cheap and oozing attraction, macaroni cheese straight out of the tin is a brilliant tench and carp bait. The chances are it won’t have been used before on your water.

4 MARSHMALLOWS Provided you can resist the temptation to eat your whole stash, small marshmallows (or even the popular children’s sweet Flumps) can be used to target carp off the top from spring through to autumn. Great for stalking and picking off cruising carp, too.

5 MEATBALLS Another great bait that costs little and can be plucked straight off the supermarket shelf. Brilliant for barbel… just ask Howard Maddocks, who caught a 16lb 3oz British record from the River Severn using a meatball way back in 1997.

Elderberries, deadly for roach.
