Catch a barbel on the float
If your barbel fishing currently involves watching two rods pointing at the sky and waiting for a ‘three foot twitch’, a challenge I’m going to put to you is to give trotting a go.
It’s a great change, and every barbel on the float feels a bit special, as there is undoubtedly more skill involved.
My favourite method is to trot cubes of luncheon meat or banded pellets.
Large hookbaits help avoid the attentions of smaller fish, though you will undoubtedly catch some small chub – however, on the float they are actually good sport compared to being dragged in behind a 4oz feeder!
Shouldered floats for faster flows in rivers.
