Biggin Lake, Oundle, Northants

Alex Walker recommends the cracking Biggin Lake situated right in the middle of Oundle Golf Club. This beautiful estate lake is well stocked with carp, roach and barbel, which will certainly ensure you get a few bites on your visit.

If you are looking to catch big carp, head for the golf course pegs and fish tight in the margins with paste, small boilies or catmeat.

For silvers, the Woodside Bank is a noted hotspot. Pole fish casters for big bags of roach.

Throop Fishery, Bournemouth, Dorset

This stretch of perhaps one of the best chub rivers in the country is perfect for stalking fish – which is what Gary Thompson did to catch a cracker of 6lb 7oz.

Fishing on Beat Two of the famous fishery, Gary spotted a group of three big chub and decided to target them. He used a big piece of meat on a size 6 Super Specialist hook rolled straight into the chub’s path.

There’s loads of space on the fishery, from which chub to 8lb and barbel over 14lb have come. Contact: Ringwood Tackle, 01425 475155

river Wear, Shincliffe Hall, Co durham

Peter Richard and best friend Gavin Lee Marshall have been fishing this river since they were kids and love targeting the stretch at Shincliffe for its chub. Twentyseven-year-old Peter caught his first specimen chub from this stretch – a monster of 7lb.

He said: “It’s not a prolific fishery, but I have had one of my best-ever days on the bank here.”

The river is also home to big dace, roach and bream. Trotting maggots can bring a mixed bag for those who spend time finding the fish-holding areas.
